Kuykendall has one cozy site for up to 60 campers adjacent to Kuykendall Creek at an elevation of 2,600 feet. There is a little-known 35- ft. high waterfall a couple miles down the road that requires a five-mile hike one way and short bushwhack down a steep bank to see.
Campsite has the usual group camping amenities – fire rings, picnic tables, vault toilet and water pump. Reservations required at least four days prior with minimum stays. Confirmation number needed when calling for gate lock combination.
Stream crossing required to access campground so high-profile or four-wheel-drive vehicle may be required during high water.
There are no signs indicating where to bushwhack off the road to Kuykendall Falls. The last 1/4 mile is a steep climb so check out Kevin Adams’ book North Carolina Waterfalls for exact directions. Adams says the falls are “just about picture perfect” and worthwhile if you’re up for a 10-mile round trip hike, most of which is pretty uneventful. GPS and a map required.
Note: Also a gamelands, so wear orange in hunting season.
